Kick a goal for the environment by joining the Origin AFL Green program. Creating a more sustainable future is a hot topic at the moment, but finding easily achievable ways to make it happen can be a challenge.

Over the next three years, Origin’s AFL Green program will neutralise an estimated 120,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions generated by AFL House and AFL clubs throughout the NAB Cup and Toyota Premiership Season and Finals Series.

The Kangaroos are leading the charge by being one of the first Clubs to declare involvement, with the aim of becoming the first sporting club in the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become completely carbon-neutral.

The result is ‘Green for Footy’, a program that calculates how much carbon dioxide the Kangaroos emit into the atmosphere through team activities such as gas and electricity usage at the club and on the ground at Telstra Dome and Carrara, as well as road and interstate air travel. Current Origin calculations estimate that the club uses an incredible 2,000 tonnes per year!

On receiving this news, the Kangaroos sought an immediate plan of action from Origin to reduce their negative impact on the environment.

Origin’s recommended plan of attack involves the Club purchasing Green Credits to fund tree planting, accredited energy efficiency programs and other sustainable initiatives to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
