The Fremantle Football Club is pleased to announce that Byron Schammer has agreed to terms with the club to continue his career at Fremantle until the end of the 2009 season.

Schammer, 21, said he was delighted to be continuing his career with Fremantle.

“I’m very happy to lock it away this early in the year and I’m looking forward to getting back to playing some footy and hopefully contributing to winning some games,” Schammer said.

”I’ve got a lot of good mates at the club and hopefully I can stay here for a long time.”

Appendicitis and a blocked bowel in early 2007 saw Schammer’s pre season campaign heavily restricted as he recovered from surgery and a dramatic 16kg weight loss. Since returning to full training with his Fremantle team mates, Schammer has regained the weight he lost, while working himself back to full fitness with an increased gym programme and strong form with WAFL side Claremont.

“The guys down here were fantastic to come and visit me in hospital and since I’ve been out of hospital they have been great,” Schammer said of his team mates and coaches.

”The club has been very supportive, the coaching staff and everyone and I’m looking forward to trying to repay everyone when I get back onto the field.”

In his 77 matches with Fremantle, Schammer has become an integral part of the team’s midfield. He played in all but one of the club’s matches in 2006 and averaged more than 17 possessions per game.

Fremantle’s General Manager Commercial Operations Steve Rosich said the club was thrilled to have Schammer continue his career at Fremantle.

“It is fantastic that Byron has chosen to remain at Fremantle with his best football and a long career ahead of him,” Mr Rosich said.

Schammer joins Brett Peake, Aaron Sandilands, Roger Hayden, Heath Black, Marcus Drum and Garrick Ibbotson in re-signing with Fremantle this year.

Schammer’s current playing contract ends at the end of this year.
