Ablett is holidaying in the Whitsunday Islands, but is expected to make an announcement regarding his future by the end of the week.
Geelong chief executive Brian Cook believed Ablett had already made up his mind, conceding the “odds are against” the Cats keeping their star.
Cook and football manager Neil Balme revealed on Tuesday that Thompson was suffering burnout and could walk away from the club, despite being contracted for another year.
The bombshell came only hours after Essendon announced favourite son James Hird would return to coach the club next season.
Hird has already expressed a desire to lure a senior assistant coach to Windy Hill and is a former teammate of Thompson.
Hawthorn is also dealing with the prospect of losing a disillusioned player, with the club questioning the professionalism of livewire forward Carl Peterson.
The Herald Sun reports Peterson has been out of contact with the Hawks in recent weeks and is struggling with the demands of AFL football.
The 23-year-old, who played 17 games this season, had a similar issue at his former club Richmond and the Hawks will weigh up his future after the upcoming exchange period.
The Herald Sun also reports that Tigers defender Will Thursfield has requested a trade.
Thursfield played 14 games for the club this season, but believes he could be given greater opportunities elsewhere.
The Tigers are willing to part will the tall backman for the right deal.
Richmond has already been linked to disgruntled Essendon midfielder Bachar Houli and Brisbane Lion Justin Sherman, who is set to join the exodus from the Gabba.
In Adelaide, the Advertiser reports that emerging Crow James Sellar could feature in the deal that gets Carlton ruckman Sam Jacobs to West Lakes.
Jacobs told the Blues on Monday that he wanted to be traded to Adelaide, with the lure of a three-year deal.
Sellar has played just 16 games since being drafted by the Crows with pick No.14 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft and could fill Carlton’s requirement of a key defender.
The club is also in the hunt for Blues utility Andrew Walker, who was granted permission to meet with the Western Bulldogs on Monday.
