The 33-year-old, who played for the Collingwood VFL team last week after recovering from a calf injury sustained in late January, is one of two players brought in to the side that beat Fremantle by 26 points in round one last Saturday at the MCG.
The other inclusion is Ben Johnson, who along with Burns adds about 400 games experience and considerable midfield drive and class to the Magpie line-up.
Johnson returns having served the six-match suspension he was dealt after an incident during last year’s round 20 clash with Melbourne at the MCG.
Burns and Johnson replace Sean Rusling and Martin Clarke in the side. Rusling is set to endure an extended period on the sidelines after sustaining another serious shoulder injury during the second quarter of the round one match, while Clarke will play in the opening round of the VFL competition this Saturday afternoon when the Magpies host Port Melbourne at MC Labour Park.
Burns, who has played 247 games for the Magpies, became Collingwood’s 44th skipper recently when he was appointed Nathan Buckley’s replacement.
The three Collingwood emergencies for the match are Brodie Holland, Ben Reid and Alan Toovey.
