Melbourne’s rapid improvement in 2010 can be put down to many factors.
But two of the biggest are picks one and two in last year’s NAB AFL draft.
It has been a while since two kids burst on to the scene with as much aplomb as Tom Scully and Jack Trengove.
Both first-year players have appeared in all nine games for Melbourne in a sensational start to their careers.
Scully grabbed 20 possessions as an 18-year-old on debut and that has been about his average in his opening nine-game gambit.
Against the Bulldogs he was superb with 39 mostly effective touches and five tackles on a night where the Demons fell just short of victory against the 3rd best side of 2009.
Trengove played a bit of senior footy before he arrived but his is still just 18 and is grabbing 22 possessions and laying almost four tackles a game.
If you’ve seen them play not many of those possessions are wasted.
Its early days but they appear on the road to be the Nathan Buckley and James Hird of the new generation.
Not that many players jump straight in at AFL level and have the impact these players have had.
Of course it is improvement across the board that has driven the Demons to the edge of the top eight this season.
Colin Sylvia is another who looks to have gone to another level and their youthful defence led by James Frawley is on the right track.
Geelong fans will undoubtedly be screaming for their beloved Cats on Saturday afternoon at Skilled Stadium.
But if they pause for a moment and take a look at the opposition, they might just see the beginning stages of a couple of players who will be household names.
