CARLTON’S Irish rookie Michael Shields has returned home to play with his county Gaelic Football team Cork, less than a year after arriving in Australia.

Shields, Carlton’s fourth round selection in the 2008 NAB AFL Rookie Draft, met with Carlton players and officials last week, where he expressed his desire to return to Ireland.

Shields' team Cork beat Tadhg Kennelly’s home county of Kerry in the Munster championship final and it’s expected that he will line up for the team in the All-Ireland quarter final next month.

Shields departed Ireland after his side lost to Kerry in the All-Ireland final last year.

Speaking to carltonfc.com.au, Shields said homesickness was a factor in his decision to quit.

"I miss home and I’ve been fighting that for a while and, while I could have battled it out for another two or three months, I had made my decision.

"While realising the game wasn’t for me, I have a great appreciation for the game of AFL. I wish to take the opportunity to thank Carlton for what they have done for me.

"While I’m disappointed that everything didn’t work out perfectly, it was still a great experience and one that I will never forget. I extend my best wishes to the playing group on a bright and successful future.”
