West Coast Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett was on hand this morning to announce a three-year contract extension with major sponsor SGIO. The club will continue its partnership with the insurers, who have been working with the Eagles since 1987.
The announcement is full of positives for the Eagles, with Nisbett saying the club will now look to build and expand facilities thanks to the backing of such partners as SGIO.
“It will certainly be invested back into the club," Nisbett said. "If we didn’t have sponsors like SGIO, then we wouldn’t be able to do that.
“We certainly need better premises and facilities for our guys. The senior guys who are here today can testify to that, having seen some of the other facilities that are going up around the place. That’s something that we are very mindful of.”
Whether these expansions take place at the Eagles' current home ground, Patersons Stadium, or at the proposed new sporting facility tentatively slated for the suburb of Burswood, is yet to be determined, but Nisbett says the club would be happy to stay where they currently are.
“The preferred option is to keep Subiaco as an oval and stay at the ground if we could," Nisbett said.
"We have other options. We have been in contact with the Perth Football Club, talking about developments that they are looking at.
"We have been talking to other community leaders who have said that their councils would like us to move to their area. At this stage we would like to stay put and keep the ground as it is.”
Nisbett also acknowledged the fact that should a new sporting facility in Western Australia get the green light, the West Coast Eagles would be in a position to adapt their plans for expansions.
“If we get a new stadium, then we are going to have to move really quickly to make sure that we keep up with other clubs and that will mean better facilities for us," Nisbett said.
“Once a decision is made, we would like to move very quickly and get things done.”
Asked whether he had any personal preference as to where the new stadium should be built, Nisbett replied: “No, I’d just like a new stadium.”
