BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss says the MCG is the perfect venue for his side to notch consecutive victories for the first time this season.

The Lions are one of eight teams tied on three wins but they have a dismal away record and face Richmond at the ‘G on Saturday.

Voss says the players will be relishing the chance to play at the home of football.

“They should be really excited about going down to the MCG and being able to play, we don’t get a lot of chances to be able to do it,” Voss said.

“When you go to the MCG it’s hard not to feel like you belong there because it’s the tradition of football and finals are played there.”

“We need to be able to get two wins in a row to be able to get us on the right path for the season.”

Voss has urged his players to keep their pre game routine the same as when they play in Brisbane to keep a sense of normalcy.

He says parochial crowds can give away teams extra energy to run out games and the Lions players need to learn how to deal with that.

“I just think teams are becoming so good at traveling, it’s got to become obsolete for you as a football team,” Voss said.

“With more teams coming in the next couple of years, you’re going to travel even more, so I think it’s a critical factor that we’ve got to get right because this (poor away record) can’t keep going on.”

Voss is preparing for the likely return of Ben Cousins to the top level after he played for Coburg in the VFL on Saturday.

“If he’s got through unscathed you would probably presume that he’s going to play seniors,” Voss said.

“We’ve got to treat him with the normal respect that we would for any player of that calibre that comes in.”

Rhan Hooper has recovered from an ankle injury but will return through the reserves this weekend.

Voss is likely to stick with the same side that beat Essendon by 43 points at the Gabba.

That includes giving Sam Sheldon his second game in Voss’s old number three guernsey.

“He handled it all in his stride, he put his body on the line when he needed to, he made the right decisions when he needed to; he manned up defensively,” Voss said.

“You don’t want them coming in for one game and then going out for another.”

Voss has hinted that in-form defender Joel Patfull may get the job on Matthew Richardson, particularly if Richo is given a long leash to run around the ground.

“Patfull is one our elite runners in our club, he has outstanding endurance,” Voss said.
