GEELONG coach Chris Scott is hoping the return of Joel Selwood for Sunday's match against the Brisbane Lions will help put an end to his team's mini losing streak.
After consecutive losses to Essendon and West Coast, which spoiled an unbeaten run of 13 matches, first-year coach Scott said arresting some midfield concerns was on top of his priority list this week.
Geelong travelled directly from Perth - where it played West Coast last Friday night - to the Gold Coast in preparation for the clash against the Lions, and trained strongly at Southport Football Club on Wednesday morning.
The Cats spent considerable time towards the end of the session on their stoppages.
Selwood returns on Sunday after a four-week suspension for striking Hawthorn's Brent Guerra, but Scott said he had his eyes on the rest of the midfield.
"We're really pleased to get Joel back, he's obviously an important part of our side but more importantly we need to bounce back," he said.
"More than the fact we've been beaten the last couple of weeks, the issue is we haven't played as well as we'd like to, particularly in the first half; so we have to arrest that and quickly.
"The opposition have been able to play the game in their forward half, which in the modern game that makes it very difficult: one, for you to score, and two, to hold up the dam wall.
"Most of the time that's about our work around the midfield and winning the ball first and getting it forward, that would be the main thing (we're working on)."
Scott said Geelong had missed Selwood and having him back would make a big difference.
"If he's not our best player, he's in our top couple of players. Very few sides can cover that completely," he said.
"You'd hate to think we were completely reliant on him. He's a very important part of our system, but he's only one part and hopefully we've learnt a little bit in his absence but we're certainly going to welcome him back."
Scott said coming to the Gold Coast early was important for two reasons.
"The change of scenery was a big part of it, mitigating the travel was a big part of it. A trip to Perth and a trip to Brisbane is quite unusual so we thought that was a potential issue in the draw and we've hopefully turned it into a positive," he said.
"It was freezing cold and raining in Geelong when we left. Only time will tell if it's a positive thing. We think it has been so far, but I'll tell you what, if we lose again people will be asking questions."
