GOLD Coast recruit Jared Brennan didn't fight back with words after former teammate Simon Black branded him a "mercenary", instead he hit back with a stunning best on ground performance as deemed by the coaches.

The 26-year-old racked up 30 disposals, 14 clearances and a goal, guiding his side to an eight-point win over the Lions in the inaugural Q Clash on Saturday night.

For his performance Guy McKenna and Michael Voss awarded Brennan a perfect 10 votes as part of the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.

Brennan said post-match that he didn't want to engage in a war of words with Black and instead focused his energy on the game at hand.

"I had to bite my tongue a couple of times, I didn't want to discredit any of the Lions," Brennan said."I credit a lot to those guys and I wasn't going to come out and bag them."

Brennan was one of six players to earn 10 votes in round seven with Essendon captain Jobe Watson once again impressing the coaches.

For the second time this season, Watson was awarded 10 votes, overtaking dual Brownlow medalist Chris Judd as the leader.

Watson (43) is six votes clear of Judd (37) who only scored two votes in Monday night's win over St Kilda.

Melbourne midfielder Brent Moloney sits behind them in third following an outstanding display in the Demon's 96-point demolition of Adelaide.

His 31 touches, 21 of them contested and 19 clearances earned him 10 votes, while Sydney Swan Ryan O'Keefe, Richmond small forward Robin Nahas and Carlton's Bryce Gibbs were also deemed best on ground by the coaches.

Twin brothers, Chris and Brad Scott, couldn't agree who was best on ground in the clash between their two sides, Geelong and North Melbourne, with Cat James Kelly coming away with nine votes.
