Blake Caracella was the offensive coach in season 2008, specifically working with the Magpie forward line.  He will now take on the opposition coaching duties for the 2009 season.

Collingwood List Assessment: Numbers 31-45

31.  Chris Dawes:  Played in six senior games including two in finals and averaged nine disposals and five marks.  Dawes kicked three goals against Adelaide in the Qualifying final.

Blake Caracella says: Fantastic finish to the season.  Midway through the season in the VFL he put together four really good games which showed he was ready for senior footy.  To play six games and out mark key defenders, especially in his last few games, is really encouraging for next year.

32.  Travis Cloke:  Led the team in contested marks (40) and kicked 40 goals for the season.  Played 23 games averaging 14 disposals, seven marks and two goals.

Another solid year from Travis.  Unfortunately he was sick for both our finals.  He nearly didn’t play against the Crows and still had the after effects the next week.  He will be a very valuable player for our team next year.

33.  Brad Dick:  Missed the entire season with a knee injury sustained in a preseason match against West Coast.

Very unfortunate that he had to have a knee reconstruction before the season started.  He is going to be a very valuable asset along the lines of the Davey boys and Rioli.  Really fast, good skills and can put a lot of pressure on.

34.  Alan Toovey:  Averaged nine disposals, four tackles and two marks a game in the seven matches he played.

Unfortunately for Toovey he broke his foot against St Kilda.  He was playing some very consistent footy in the reserves but just couldn’t quite find his way into the team.  Once he did play he played two really good games but then suffered an injury.  Hopefully he can get a permanent spot for next year.

35.  Simon Prestigiacomo:  Spent most of the season rehabilitating but managed two games (round 22 and the Qualifying final).

Very unlucky this season with injuries.  He is a very important member of our backline and hopefully can play a lot of next year with Wakelin now retired.

36.  Dane Swan: Won the Copeland Trophy after a remarkable season leading the club in disposals (590), kicks (368), and second in marks (163).  He averaged 25 disposals, seven marks, three tackles and one goal a game.

Fantastic year and is now becoming one of the dominant midfielders of the competition.  He is a fantastic ball winner who rarely gets beaten in a one on one contest.  Good reward with the best and fairest.

37.  Sam Iles: Delisted after playing in 18 games at the VFL level.

Unfortunately for Sam he couldn’t quite break into the senior team this year.  We wish Sam all the best for the rest of his career.

38.  Tyson Goldsack:  His season encompassed 17 games including both finals appearances.  Played as a defender, he averaged nine disposals, three marks and three tackles a game

He missed a bit of preseason this season which cost him in terms of consistency.  Managed to play a few games but was up and down at times.  With a big preseason there is no doubt Tyson can be the player that we think he can be.

39.  Heath Shaw: The running half-back defender had to manage the opposition tagging him for much of the season.  He still was able to average 20 disposals and seven marks.

He is really one of the premier offensive back men in the league.  He can beat his player one on one, use the ball well and can win a contest.  Unfortunately for him he has made a mistake and has learned his lesson.  Next year holds big things for him as he tries to redeem himself.

40.  Chris Bryan: The ruckman played in 17 games this year and provided a strong backup to Josh Fraser.  Averaged 14 hit outs, 10 disposals and four marks a game.

Brings a great deal of intensity and competiveness into the midfield.  He isn’t one of the tallest ruckmen going around but he fights for the ball on the ground very well.  Had an up and down season and hopefully will be ready to go after a big preseason.

41.  Kevin Dyas: Played in 13 games at the VFL level before tearing his hamstring.  He averaged 12 disposals, three marks and two tackles a game.

A very competitive defensive player who is still learning the game.  He has come across from Ireland and had improved throughout the year.  It was a shame he tore his hamstring in the second half of the season and hopefully can continue his rise next season.

43.  Jaxson Barham: He was a force in the VFL playing 14 games and averaging 16 disposals, four marks and four tackles.

In his first year of football it was easy to see the course of development he experienced.  Because of his development he was on the fringe of selection for the last four games.  Jaxson brings a bit of pace and endurance into the team.  Hopefully with that improvement and if he can put some weight on, he could make a niche for himself next year.

44.  Luke Casey-Leigh:  Played in 14 games in the VFL before being delisted at the end of the season.

Luke played quite a few roles for us in the reserves but struggled because he is immature physically.

45.  Brent Macaffer:  A standout on the VFL team all season and was awarded the Joseph Wren Trophy (best VFL player).  Averaged 14 disposals, seven marks and two goals a game.

Brent has progressed from being a rookie to really improving his game through the two years he has been at the football club.  He was very close to playing in the senior side last year but was probably kept out due to Dawes and McCarthy playing quite well.
