Friday night’s NAB Challenge match saw stand-in head coach Nathan Buckley lead Collingwood to a 22-point win over Adelaide in Alice Springs.
With a third of the ground submerged with water after a torrential downpour hit central Australia, the conditions showcased the skills of several Magpies on the night.
In a unique role for the 2006 Copeland Trophy winner, Alan Didak played a best on ground performance down back.
Sweeping across the back half of the ground, Didak looked comfortable in cutting off Adelaide’s attack while utilising his foot skills in the ankle deep water.
Buckley was particularly pleased with Didak’s efforts, indicating it might not be the last time supporters see the 27-year-old play a defending role.
“He (Didak) played off half back and played very well,” Buckley said post match.
“We know he has got a lot of natural talent and he has naturally been a forward in the past but to give him that role is something different.
“He came off and said he really enjoyed having that different stimulus. His communication back there was good.”
Also impressing the coach was youngster Ben Sinclair, picked up in last year’s AFL Draft (overall pick 62).
“I thought young Ben Sinclair looked very dangerous. His speed when he came onto the ball and his courage to keep his head over the ball when it was his turn was fantastic.”
Mick Malthouse, who was watching the match from the stats box, made a point to praise Sinclair’s efforts via the club’s live chat conducted from the ground on the night.
“Ben Sinclair has a great first touch and is not scared to put his head over the ball. He is not afraid to create his own play.”
Up next for Collingwood in the NAB Challenge is a Friday twilight (4 pm) affair against Richmond at Visy Park.
