NORTH Melbourne coach Brad Scott has hit back at claims that his players took cheap shots at their Western Bulldogs opponents during their fiery clash on Saturday.

Scott has also backed defender Scott Thompson, who was reported along with Bulldogs forward Barry Hall for their scuffle in the second quarter at Etihad Stadium.

Hall had Thompson in a headlock for several seconds after the North defender knocked him off balance while he was tying his bootlaces. The scuffle was the culmination of Thompson's sustained attempts to put Hall off his game in the first half.

Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade complained publicly about the perceived lack of protection that Hall received from the umpires, and praised his players for their cool heads in the face of so-called "cheap shots" by North Melbourne players.

"We had two players (Dylan Addison and Daniel Giansiracusa) with severe head cuts, there were a lot of cheap shots off the ball all day and our players were very disciplined," he said on Saturday.

"I thought the discipline and our character showed through and that's why we had such a big win."

But in a statement on his club's website on Monday, Scott expressed his displeasure at Eade's verbal volley.

"Comments made by Rodney Eade after the match suggesting our players took ‘cheap shots’ off the ball are categorically incorrect and disappointing from such an experienced coach," Scott said.

"They strike at the heart and integrity of our playing group; they are factually incorrect and are without foundation.”

Scott acknowledged that Thompson had deliberately set out to get under Hall's skin but he made no apology for the defender's gamesmanship.

“Scott Thompson is a man of the highest integrity who plays the game with the hardness and passion that North Melbourne supporters should expect from all of their players," he said.

"There is no doubt he plays an antagonistic style of football but full forwards are not supposed to enjoy playing on full backs and I will not stand by and allow Scott’s character to be assassinated because of the reaction of an opposition player.

"Scott Thompson doesn’t discriminate - he plays the same way every week. Scott’s instructions are to play hard and to play fair - with cold aggression.

"The AFL dictates the rules of the game and we will always endeavor to play within those rules."

Hall was reported twice on Saturday, once for wrestling with Thompson and once for engaging in rough conduct for his headlock on Thompson.

Thompson was also reported twice for wrestling and misconduct for headbutting Hall.
