ST KILDA recruiting manager John Peake expects next week's exchange period to be quieter than many believe.

Peake, who is entering his second drafting period with the Saints after playing a key role in assisting recruiting manager Stephen Wells at Geelong, said his thoughts on this year's trade period had swung in recent times.

"I've gone from thinking it would be quite active to not," he told afl.com.au.

“I wasn't sure what was going to happen with Daniel Kerr and Alan Didak. My personal opinion is that nothing will happen now [that Kerr has re-signed with West Coast].

"You've got [Robbie] Warnock and that'll be sorted out between Carlton and Fremantle, my feeling is that. So I don't know whether a lot will happen.

"Andrew Lovett at Essendon has also been mentioned, so their [club's] history suggests they will be after a pick for him, rather than a player. Ryan O'Keefe is another interesting one.

"I don't think anyone will give up early picks and it'll be interesting to see if any clubs take any older players, who are around 28 for example, because clubs have got to get around the compromised drafts."

Peake said the Saints were looking to build their list with versatile players, after analysing the strength of the Hawthorn and Geelong sides.

"On the ladder position, we're the fourth best team in the competition and we want to be the best team, so we've got to look at Hawthorn and Geelong and what they've got and we haven't," Peake said.

"So that's what we'll be looking at and we've also got to get a little bit more flexibility in our midfield, so we've also got blokes who can go back and forward, like Hawthorn have got.

"We've got a little bit of it, with [Brendon] Goddard and [Jason] Gram, but we've got to get a little bit more. So we'll be looking to increase talent."
