COLLINGWOOD’S on-field momentum was matched off field on Thursday with news five of its youngest stars have re-signed with the club.

Nathan Brown, Ben Reid, Heritier O’Brien and Tyson Goldsack have all signed new deals to stay on at the Lexus Centre while star midfielder Dane Swan has extended his current contract.

Swan, who has arguably been his side’s best in Collingwood’s recent back-to-back trouncings of Geelong and West Coast, has extended his current deal by 12 months meaning he is certain to be a Magpie until at least the end of 2010.

Key defenders Brown and O’Brien have both signed three-year deals, keeping them tied to the Pies until the end of 2011.

Meanwhile, emerging youngsters Reid and Goldsack will be Magpies until at least the end of 2010 after signing two-year deals.

Collingwood, which just a month ago looked shaky at 3-4, is suddenly the form team of the AFL after three stirring wins.

Thursday’s good news is just another shot in the arm for coach Mick Malthouse and his side, and Collingwood football manager Geoff Walsh said gaining the five youngster’s signatures had been a priority.

“It’s great to have those five boys re-commit to the club, and for us to make a commitment to them because they’re all players of considerable talent and promise,” Walsh told collingwoodfc.com.au.

“They’re all at the beginning of their careers, bar Dane, who has made some great inroads in the last two or three years … to become one of our premier midfielders.”

Brown, Reid and Goldsack are all products of the 2006 NAB AFL Draft, while O’Brien had to take a harder road, working his way to AFL ranks via the club’s rookie list.

“Nathan, Ben and Tyson have all, at different times, made a mark in senior footy in their first 18 months at the club, so that augers well for us as a club, as we know we’ve got some young talent at our disposal,” Walsh said.

“Harry’s probably 12-18 months ahead of those three boys in terms of making a spot in the seniors his own.

“It does give us some confidence that we’ve got some good young players underpinning our future.”
