NORTH MELBOURNE coach Brad Scott says two defenders might not be enough to quell the influence of Jack Riewoldt in Sunday's Eureka game against Richmond.

Scott Thompson is likely to get first crack at Riewoldt, who leads the Coleman Medal race with 58 goals, though his coach is hoping Nathan Grima can return from an ankle injury.

Riewoldt's strength in the contests seems North's biggest concern, but Scott said Grima would not be selected unless he was 100 per cent fit.

"He (Riewoldt) has been in fantastic form. Something Jack's been able to show is that regardless of [defensive] help, he's taken pack marks two and three times outnumbered," Scott said.

"He's a terrific contested mark. He looks really athletic and he's full of confidence.

"His teammates have total confidence in him in that they appear to kick it to him regardless of how many numbers are back.

"We're going to have to really put a lot of pressure on through the midfield to curb his influence because I don't think we're going to be able to rely on one or even two defenders to stop him."

Corey Jones, David Hale and Aaron Edwards are among those in consideration to replace key forward Drew Petrie, who had surgery on his fractured right foot on Wednesday.

Scott said Petrie's procedure had been successful and that he would be given extended rehabilitation time leading into the pre-season.

"Our focus is on his long-term health, and we're assured and we're really confident that he'll come back bigger and better than ever next year," he said.

"We've got a lot of players who are in form in the VFL, which is some consolation for the loss of Drew. It's obviously a very disappointing situation, but we feel we've got the players to step in and contribute for us."

The make-up of North's squad will be decided after Thursday afternoon's main training session at Arden Street, with Ben Speight and Jamie Macmillan edging closer to their prospective debuts.

Scott expected the session to also reveal how his players would respond to their 30-point loss to the Sydney Swans - a result that had left them "mentally injured" because of the top-eight spot at stake.

"Last week was the clichéd eight-point game. This week we're hanging on. We've got to win it to stay in contention [for the finals]," he said.

"There's going to be no lack of motivation there. We'll really see what our players are made of."

And he agreed that comparisons could be drawn between North and Richmond, much like his assessment of Melbourne earlier this season.

"There's a real similarity between the age of the playing lists and the excitement of some of the young midfielders and some of the young forwards," Scott said.

"Lachlan Hansen and Jack Riewoldt were taken in the same draft ... Ben Cunnington and Dustin Martin are both Victorian country boys who played together in the under-18 championships and are good friends. It will be great to see the two of them go head to head on the weekend."
