THE AFL grievance tribunal for sacked St Kilda player Andrew Lovett is underway at Etihad Stadium, but chairman Jack Rush has declared it a private hearing with the media and anyone not involved in the proceeding asked to leave.

Representation for Lovett and the AFLPA were not prepared to have the matter heard publicly.

St Kilda has applied for the hearing of Lovett's grievance claim to be stayed until after the completion of his criminal proceeding.

He has been charged with rape after an incident involving a woman on December 24, 2009.

The hearing started at 5.15pm (local time), with media asked to leave at 6pm.

It is understood Thursday night's hearing could take up to five hours.
