The Herald Sun’s chief football writer Michael Sheahan has ranked Collingwood midfielder Scott Pendlebury number one in his annual top 50 players at the completion of the AFL season.

Sheahan selected a total of seven Magpies in his top 50 with Travis Cloke (3) and Dane Swan (5) included in his top 10.  Dale Thomas (15), Luke Ball (22), Ben Reid (40) and Leon Davis (45) made the top 50.

There was an equal representation of Collingwood and Geelong players (seven each) while Carlton was next best with six.

The senior journalist’s top 50 comprised of 24 midfielders, 13 defenders, 10 forwards and three ruckman.

Pendlebury is also a chance to win his first club best and fairest at tonight's E.W. Copeland Trophy event at Crown Palladium.  Read the full preview here.

This is what he had to say about Pendlebury’s season:

“He’s not the most explosive player in the business, but there’s no one more productive than Collingwood’s tireless No. 10.  It’s death by a thousand cuts for the opposition.

“His numbers are extraordinary: 742 disposals - almost half of them contested - with a 78 per cent efficacy rate.  He is brilliant in traffic, a reflection of his basketball-honed skills, surprisingly good overhead and covers an enormous amount of ground.

" He’s also equally comfortable deep in defence or kicking for goal.  His return of 24 goals is excellent for a midfielder.

"The umpires showed their appreciation with 24 Brownlow votes.  Excellent in the finals, too.”
