ST KILDA midfielder Leigh Montagna has admitted some of his teammates didn't cope with the pressure of last week's finals loss to Geelong.

Speaking two days before the semi-final against Collingwood, Montagna said the team was looking to right some wrongs against Collingwood.

"A few players didn't stand up in the finals atmosphere and we're lucky enough to get a chance to do it again this week and that's what the players are setting themselves for," he said.

The 24-year-old admitted he was one who was slow to get going against the Cats.

"I was a bit disappointed in my start. I didn't get my hands on it enough and there were a lot of players in a similar boat," he said.

"We really only focused on the first half and we thought as the rest of the game panned out it was over by three-quarter time. Both teams wouldn't take away a lot from the last quarter.

The speedy Saint said the team would look at winning more contested football and sticking to a simple game plan to get back to their winning ways.

"We had a look at ourselves. We didn't focus too much on Geelong. We looked at what we need to do. They were just simple things we got away from. Some of our structural setups we got away from and Geelong beat us in the contested footy," he said.

"That's where the game starts and we didn't get our hands on it first. We've moved on pretty quickly and we know we can rectify it. If we can do the basics we'll be in the ball game."

After securing the double chance, Montagna said the side would be underachieving if it couldn't win a final, but regardless, the Saints had already shown improvement from last year's ninth-place finish.

"I wouldn't say (it would be) a hollow season. It would be disappointing to finish top four and go out in straight sets. It would make it a disappointing year. We're not looking at that yet," he said.

"We've made finals this year so it's progress from last year."
