Dean Laidley is undaunted by the prospect of returning to Skilled Stadium to take on Geelong this Saturday, despite it being the scene of the Roos' worst loss last season.

The Cats handed out an 85-point football lesson in round nine, but the Roos' coach said playing the side that he considers to be premiership favourites would be excellent experience for his charges.

"It's going to be a great test for us and I'm just looking forward to the challenge really," he said from Arden Street.

"(Last year's loss) was terrible - I think they kicked 6.6 to 1.6 in the first quarter and we were just way off the boil. It was our fourth loss in a row and probably our worst for the year.

"We've reminded them about it as we did … about our performance against Port Adelaide when we went over there last year. You need to remind them, but if you keep telling them how bad they played down there I don't know what sort of message that sends.

"Yes, we have brought it up, but it's very much a positive slant towards the game."

Laidley was pleased with how his players have responded to a rigorous pre-season.

"I was actually quite surprised how well we ran out the game on the weekend - we've trained very hard throughout the pre-season competition and we didn't lighten off the load at all,' he said.

"The last two weeks have been pretty light and the boys have come up a real treat - we're really strong at the moment - our fitness is great and it was certainly our best team performance in how we played together for the whole pre-season."

Troy Makepeace is in the selection mix this week, but is unlikely to get a call-up according to Laidley as his VFL affiliate, the Tasmanian Devils, had the bye last weekend.

"You'd probably look at guys who played a game. David Trotter and Ben Schwarze are knocking down the door to get in and they'll go very close this week," he said.
