Adelaide Football Club’s official Facebook fans page is now the biggest sporting club site in Australia.

A transfer of some fans from an old unofficial page during the week has lifted the club’s total to 37,660, taking the Crows ahead of nearest AFL rival Essendon (34,326).

NRL club Brisbane Broncos have 31,992 fans on their official page.

Crows chief executive officer Steven Trigg said the Facebook page - launched mid-season last year - gave supporters another opportunity to be engaged with the Club.

“For us it is much more than another way of directly distributing information and news to people interested in the Crows,” Trigg said. “It also engages these people and gets them involved, so it brings fans closer to us which has to be a good thing.

“And it’s been a pleasant surprise for us to see that so many of our Facebook fans are from outside South Australia. There’s more than 4000 people from the Sydney area, a similar number in Victoria, and a couple of thousand from overseas, so I’m sure they all enjoy the chance to connect with us.”
