NORTH Melbourne is using its pre-season matches to increase the flexibility of some its players, with defender Shannon Watt the latest to be tried in a different position.

Watt, 28, played forward during the Kangaroos' 97-point NAB Challenge win over Fremantle on Saturday, and provided his side with two goals.

Chief of football Donald McDonald said the club has focused on developing a range of players in a variety of positions in recent times, and has consequently put together a group capable of shifting around as required.

"He did very well. It was really pleasing for Shan. We tried different things, which is what the practice matches are all about," McDonald told kangaroos.com.au on Monday.

"It will depend on where the guys are at this season, if we see it again. At this stage, it was just something we wanted to try to see if we can get a bit more flexibility.

"It's a bit like Lachie [Hansen] and Drew [Petrie]. They play at either end, so if we can add Shannon to the mix that can go forward and back, it really helps us."

Petrie was another that benefitted from a change in role on Saturday, after moving back into attack and booting five goals.

"Drew played back last week and forward this week, so that was good too," he said.

Liam Anthony was another shining light for the Roos with a second encouraging performance in his debut year.

The 21-year-old former WAFL on-baller had 12 touches in the club's NAB Cup loss to Carlton two weeks ago, and followed it up on Saturday with another prolific game.

"He has been very impressive," McDonald said.

"We've been able to get a few of the boys like Jack Ziebell and Liam Anthony playing in our seniors, and so far, so good."

McDonald said Saturday's big win was a good way for the side to atone for its disappointing turnout against the Blues.

"Freo went in undermanned but we also rested Brent Harvey, David Hale and Brady Rawlings, so we had a few out as well," he said.

"It was just really good after the disappointing performance the previous week.

"Our focus has always been round one so that hasn't changed. It was just good for the boys to go up there and get such a big win.

"Everyone got a really good hit-out and that's what we were after."
