Jones will lead out the side in the absence of Adam Simpson and will become the third member of the Roos' leadership group to step up as skipper after Brady Rawlings and Brent Harvey led in recent weeks.
Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley said Jones had come a long way in 2006.
"He's really developed as one of our leaders this year, he didn't start off in the leadership group, he was in our core group and the guys, our leadership group, probably brought him in halfway through the year," Laidley said on Thursday.
"That's a credit to him, so it will be really interesting to see how he handles that this week."
"We've changed our leadership group a couple of times, 'Arch' went out of it to concentrate on his footy, so did 'Sav' earlier in the year, and they looked at probably three or four guys who had stepped up to the plate," he said.
"They thought that Corey was probably the most well-balanced and the most well-adjusted at the present time to be able to do that.
"It was their selection and their call."
Laidley reflected on the 2006 season and said the second half of the year had thrown up many positives for him to contemplate during the off-season.
"We certainly got left at the gates, which was unfortunate, in the preseason, but I've been really pleased with the second half of the season," he said.
"We've won some great games, we've introduced a lot of players all year, I think all bar two or three players have played from our senior list.
"We've had two Rising Stars in the last six weeks and those wins have come on the back of some quality performances of the people that we've brought in and not so much the Grants and Simpsons this year."
