It's only a baby step, but four goals to Aaron Black in Saturday night's VFL match between North Ballarat and Werribee already has many North Melbourne supporters salivating.

Tall, athletic and tremendously talented, Black has been held back with groin and hip trouble since coming to the club in the 2009 National Draft.

After playing limited time with the reserves a week earlier, Black got through four quarters for the first time in twelve months with the seniors against the Tigers and some North Melbourne team-mates.

"My first senior VFL game...I was a bit nervous getting out there. In first quarter, my legs just felt like jelly," Black told kangaroos.com.au after the win.

On the stats sheet, his efficiency read 100 percent.

"Four kicks for four goals. I would have liked more of the footy I guess but four goals...can't be unhappy with that. I just had to get through and not get injured again."

It's all about management for Black and most importantly, patience. The 20 year-old is willing to do whatever it takes to avoid going back into the rehab group.

"I tightened up a bit halfway through the second quarter, so every time I came off I just sat on the bike...loosened up and felt alright to go back out.

"I played about 55 percent game-time and we'll bump it up to 60 or 70 percent and keep progressing until I can play a full game in about a month or so I reckon."

Black wasn't alone up forward for North Ballarat with Aaron Edwards also providing a four goal return.

Edwards said it was hard to deal with being dropped from the North Melbourne side late last week.

"That's part of football obviously, getting dropped I was pretty shattered. But as soon as you get past that you just have to focus on trying to do your part for the VFL side and try and get back into the AFL as soon as possible. That's always my goal...to take a positive outlook and get back in. I think I played my role tonight and I will keep trying to put my best foot forward," Edwards said.
