THE AFL is already considering a tribunal for players' off-field indiscretions, AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou says.

Melbourne captain David Neitz suggested the parallel system on Thursday, and the Gillard report into West Coast's off-field problems also raised the concept.

Demetriou said such a system would only deal with major code of conduct issues.

"We've said for the past 12 months that we're looking at a separate tribunal or panel to look at these issues," Demetriou said.

"We welcome David's comments ... it's something we're seriously looking at."

The AFL commission will discuss the league's proposed new code of conduct next month and Demetriou is hopeful it will be in operation this year.
