GEELONG superstar Gary Ablett didn't train at Skilled Stadium on Thursday afternoon, going to the pool instead of hitting the track, but he is still expected to play in Saturday's clash with West Coast at Subiaco.

Coach Mark Thompson said that despite missing training, Ablett was almost certain to make the trip to Perth.

"I'm pretty sure Gary will be right – he'd be a 95 per cent chance to play," Thompson said from Skilled Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

"He ran last night, and like Gary does, when he gets injured he turns into a total professional and just works at it.

"He did roll his ankle and there's only a slight swelling in it, but structurally it is fine, so that's why we're so confident he'll play.

"Gary just likes to play when he's feeling perfect, and we're really confident he'll play, which means he's pretty close to being 95 per cent fit."

The Cats have other injury worries, with Paul Chapman facing a fitness test and Harry Taylor and Joel Corey still in some doubt, although young key forward Tom Hawkins is certain to play.

Chapman copped a compound dislocation of the finger a couple of weeks ago, and has to do enough ball work on the track today to convince himself that he will be fine.

"Paul Chapman needs to catch the ball – I think he's been given approval to play as long as he can tolerate the pain, so we'll find out a bit tonight with the wet balls, and see whether he gets through.

"He's pretty keen to play. It's just whether he can put up with the pain.

"Harry and Joel, they're not certain to play at this stage, and they have to tick a few boxes before they play.

"So they're in doubt."

Hawkins' form has been inconsistent over the last couple of weeks, but Thompson said the 20-year-old was travelling to Subiaco this weekend.

"We're going to play him – he's part of the plan and he does a lot of team things, he understands our structure," Thompson said.

"He was close to grabbing a few last week and kicking a few goals, the week before he wasn't so good, but that's going to happen with young players.

"Before that he had a really solid month, so we're confident we can manage him and get him up and teach him to play a very important role in our team."

Brad Ottens won't play this week, but Thompson said the star ruckman was getting closer.

"Brad Ottens is about two weeks away.

"He might run this week. He's bouncing around the place in a lot better shape."
