OUTGOING Geelong president Frank Costa says the club is aiming to name its new coach on Monday.

Former players Ken Hinkley and Brenton Sanderson, along with Fremantle assistant coach Chris Scott, are the three men who have reportedly been shortlisted for the position.

"The process is well underway," Costa told Melbourne radio station SEN on Friday.

Dual premiership coach Mark Thompson stepped down two weeks ago after 11 seasons at the helm, and a committee including football manager Neil Balme and chief executive Brian Cook has conducted the process to find his replacement.

"I've spoken with Cooky this morning. We're going over to Ireland on Monday, Brian and I. They'd like to have the decision made by Monday, so hopefully we will be able to make an announcement on Monday morning," Costa said.

"They started off with a list of 120, can you believe it?

"I think they've got it down to three or four now, so hopefully by Monday we'll get there."

Hinkley, who is currently working under Guy McKenna at expansion club Gold Coast, has had his prospects boosted by the revelation that he will be mentored by Sydney Swans premiership coach Paul Roos if he gets the job.

But Costa is refusing to declare that Hinkley - the hot favourite - is over the line.

"He's a good man, Paul Roos. He'd be a great man to work with, if you could get hold of him," Costa said.

"But I don't know who's going to get it yet. Cooky hasn't told me."

Costa will step down as Geelong president at the club's upcoming annual general meeting.

But he remains heavily involved for now and is trying to ensure the Cats' relationship with Essendon is not soured beyond repair, despite the Bombers recently poaching assistant coach Brendan McCartney.

Costa met with his Essendon counterpart David Evans on Friday to raise his concerns about the exit of McCartney and the Bombers' much-publicised courting of Thompson.

"The reason I came up to see David was [because of] all the speculation and the nonsense that has been going on through the press, and the agitation that some of it has caused our club. I thought it was best thing to do was to come and have a chat," Costa said.

"I came and spoke to David. We spoke about the whole situation, from go to whoa. We've cleared the air. I'm more than happy."
