BRISBANE Lions players can expect an intense final five weeks of training and have been warned not to relax too much during this week's bye.

The 3-14 Lions, who sit in 15th place on the AFL ladder, have their second bye for the season this weekend.

The players will have four days off following their second training session of this week on Wednesday, but Irish half-back Pearce Hanley said they had been told to prepare for a big return.

"That was a big key that came out of the meeting after the weekend, not to take this bye week to let your hair down," he said.

"It's getting rest and getting ready for the last five games. It's going to be pretty intense training-wise because we're going to try and up our game to improve on our performances."

The Lions are coming off a 45-point loss against North Melbourne on Saturday, a match they had a chance to win until deep into the third quarter where they conceded late goals.

It was the second week in succession they had dropped off in the fourth quarter after relinquishing a three quarter-time lead against Geelong the previous week.

Hanley said it was hard to pinpoint a reason for the fade-outs.

"Most of our stats we took we did pretty well," he said.

"Whether it was attitude or not, I'm not sure what happened. We're trying to fix it each week because it's becoming a habit now, which isn't good."

The 22-year-old Hanley has played all 17 matches this season and become a regular member of the Lions' team.

Coach Michael Voss moved him from defence to the wing for the first half against the Kangaroos, and although admitting to being caught out of position once or twice, Hanley said he hoped it was the first step in a progression to the midfield.

"I really enjoyed it, a bit more freedom," he said.

"Hopefully with a better pre-season of more midfield practice I'll be in there."
