It’s not every day that a Saints player is the inspiration behind an exclusive work of art, but a painting of 198 game St Kilda veteran Steven Baker was a highlight feature in this year’s prestigious Archibald prize.
Ian Bowers, a Frankston based artist and passionate Saints fan, chose to represent the tough defender for his portrait entry in 2011.
Speaking to saints.com.au, Bower described why he chose to feature Steven Baker in the painting.
“I met up with Steve at the end of last year and it was clear he was quite reflective of the past season and I wanted to bring that out in the painting,” said Bowers.
“I liked the idea of using the title of ‘The Good Shepherd’ for two reasons. Firstly for the connotation of Steven’s role as a 'blocker' to that of a shepherd and the second being the more obvious religious link with the Saints,” said Bowers.
Steven Baker said that being involved with the production of the painting was a great experience and he praised the artists’ final product.
“It was an interesting experience to feature in the painting. Ian was great to work with and I think the final painting is outstanding,” said Baker.
Bowers said that the entire process took six months, with a solid month solely dedicated to the actual painting process.
