FREMANTLE'S wealth of youth has brought a level of intensity with it that midfielder Andrew Browne hopes will ensure the club climbs up the ladder in 2009.

Seven of Fremantle's 14 new draft picks were on display in Sunday's thrilling three-point loss to Richmond and it was through tackling and defensive pressure that they made their presence felt.

Fremantle won the tackle count 81-52 with prized draft pick Stephen Hill (eight tackles) and rookie Greg Broughton (seven) leading the way.

While disappointed to lose the NAB Cup opener, Browne was thrilled with what his new teammates had brought to the side so early in the pre-season.

"That's what you get from younger players – they always have a red-hot dip and they're always desperate to do well," Browne told afl.com.au after the match.

"It's really good to have those sorts of players in our team, and it'll be great experience for them and hopefully we can get some good footy out of them this year.

"If we can come out and put that sort of pressure on the opposition every week, then we might have a reasonable season."

Tigers' star Matthew Richardson ensured it was a tight finish to a pre-season opener played at breakneck pace.

After Fremantle jumped out of the blocks and took a 23-point lead into half time, the Tigers turned the pressure up themselves going on a seven-goals-to-nil run.

But while the ferocity of the contest may have surprised fans, Browne said the two sides were ready.

"It did feel like the heat was on, but you expect that when you go out to play a game," he said. "Our boys were not too fazed by it and we'll be better for the hit-out.

"Most teams will be focusing on the pressure skills in the modern game, but that's one thing Harves expects from us, and we delivered that quite."

Browne said after a frustrating seven seasons, that have constantly been interrupted by hamstring injuries, he was excited about adding to his 27 career games.

The 24-year-old played five of Fremantle's last eight matches in 2008 and – following a positive showing on Sunday night, that included a superb running super-goal in the first quarter – he'll be pushing hard for selection when the Western Bulldogs arrive for round one on March 29.

"I've missed a fair bit of footy the last few years, so it's always really exciting for me to get out there and play and just enjoy my footy," he said.

"I've hardly missed a session this pre-season and the body feels really good, so I'm ready to give this season a red-hot crack and hopefully a few cards fall my way."
