EVERY one of the 35,933 people at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon winced when Jordan Lewis was knocked out by Bulldog Jarrod Harbrow.

The Hawks midfielder looked seriously hurt after he cannoned into Harbrow in a high-speed collision just before half time.

Lewis’ direct replacement, Grant Birchall, had to get down to business but he couldn’t help but worry about the state of his fallen teammate.

“It was a pretty big hit but he has certainly earned a lot of respect from the boys after that,” he said.
"I wasn’t too far away from the contest - he was out of it straight away but it was a great effort and that is what we expect from all the boys."

Birchall joked that skipper Sam Mitchell, whose kick Lewis was chasing, might cop a bit of flak from his teammates over the coming days.

But the Tasmanian became far more serious when asked to point out where the Hawks went wrong in the 16-point loss.

“I don’t think you can question our endeavour - just a few skill errors - but we have to make the most of our opportunities, especially against a side like the Doggies,” he said.

“We made some basic skill errors in front of goals and trying to play that tempo style of game hurt us a little bit.

"There is a fair bit we can get out of the game and also a few things we can get better at.”

While careful not to make excuses, Birchall said the early injury to Barry Hall’s direct opponent Josh Gibson was catastrophic to Hawthorn’s defensive plans.
Hall kicked six goals, four of which came in the final term.

“It’s not easy - it’s happened to us the last couple of weeks and you’ve got to manage it the best way you can,” he said.

“We had to re-jig the side and it changed around. That’s what happens. That’s footy I guess.”
