Geelong full forward Cameron Mooney believes the next month will determine what role he can play in the Cats quest for another premiership.

Mooney has been limited after an injury interrupted pre-season and is likely to spend the next four weeks playing in the VFL as he gears up for the business end of the season. He faced Werribee on Sunday and came out of the game feeling better for the run.

“I pulled up really well,” Mooney said on One.

“Playing in the next month in the ‘twos’ will be good for my fitness. I need to get my match fitness up. I’ve been playing one game on and one game off and that doesn’t work.”

Mooney booted two goals in the VFL and said he had already received a confidence boost from the run. But he knows he has more to do to get back to his best.

“I’ve set the next six weeks to find out if my body can play at AFL level. If I get match fit I will get my confidence back in my body and my form,” he said.

“But in 4-6 weeks time there is a chance that I will not be right. I could say i can’t do it, but I am in no rush to make that decision.”

Mooney’s limited pre-season has clearly hurt his fitness, and he said that the club has been working to get him through the season.

“Pre-season was tough. I missed the hardest 10 weeks. I spoke to Scotty and the plan has been to get right for August and September. I’m not geared up to play at my best now. The first half of the year is about getting right for the end of the year.”
