In the final game of the season against traditional rivals Frankston, Springvale Scorpions were like the proverbial Profiterole ; solid at both ends of the game , but soft in the middle.
After a promising start Springvale went back to their old habits by continually turning the ball over without pressure from the opposition. Then, after being 42 points behind in the last quarter, they sparked into action to storm home. The gap was cut to only 13 points with Stephen Milne on fire, kicking all of his five goals in the final term. But Frankston were able to steady with the final goal and hold out under extreme pressure.
Nick Stone (21 possessions with 9 marks) was the best of the nine Saints that played, and Raph Clarke was solid having 17 possessions. The experienced old hands of Nigel Carmody, Steve Harrison (30 possessions), Damian Carroll (23 possessions) and Jason Caples were the pick of the Springvale squad.
Great news was the surprise appearance of Matt Maguire, playing the first half only, in his quest to regain fitness before the senior final series. Also of interest was the strong performance of rookie Dylan Pfitzner in the Springvale reserves. This was only his second game for the season after his frustrating back injury.
