PORT Adelaide players will pay part of their way to Dubai for a pre-season training camp.

The Power squad will spend nine days in Dubai from late November, and players offered to partly fund the trip, the club's high performance manager Darren Burgess says.

"There was no pressure from us to do that - it's just a great sign of the group and their character," Burgess told reporters on Thursday.

"The guys are coming back a week early and partially funding their trip. It's something for people like me to get excited about when they volunteer to do that."

Burgess rejoined Power last October after stints with English Premier League club Liverpool and the Socceroos, who he took several times to Dubai for training camps.

Burgess said he would increase demands on Port's players this pre-season, given the club's later start to official training because of contesting this year's finals.

"Obviously with a rotation cap (on interchanges) coming in, that is going to make it a more physically demanding game from an endurance point of view.

"We certainly think we need to add a little bit more to our program, which is a challenge because we get three weeks less than what we did last year - and it's four weeks less than a lot of other clubs for the bulk of our group."

Burgess favoured heat over altitude training camps.

"Altitude training is very good - I'm certainly not a critic of it. But, in my opinion, it's not ideal for team sports in November when the season starts in March," he said.

"If you go out and work in 35 degrees versus 25 degrees, obviously everything is a bit harder.

"The physiological adaptation is a bit greater - in layman's terms, you're getting more bang for your buck; you're actually working harder to complete the same amount of work."
