WESTERN Bulldogs defender Brian Lake has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery.

The two-time All Australian has had a horror 2011 campaign, with a host of injuries restricting him to just five AFL games.

The 29-year-old last took to the field for Williamstown in a VFL match against the Northern Bullants on July 3, during which he broke down with a calf injury.

In a statement issued by the club, the Western Bulldogs said: "Lake will not resume playing this season with both Brian and the club now focused on ensuring he is 100 per cent fit for the commencement of pre-season."

Lake lined up in six VFL matches for Williamstown in all, booting six goals. He was never named among the Seagulls' best players.

Drafted by the Bulldogs with pick 71 in the 2001 AFL National Draft, Lake was named in a back pocket in the All Australian team in 2009 and at full-back last year.

He won the Dogs' best and fairest in 2007 and has played a total of 177 games
