The recent and unprecedented flood activity across Australia that has caused so much damage and hurt over the past month has no doubt touched us all.
The Brisbane Lions are working on a number of initiatives that will allow us as a footy club to support the flood relief appeal, and we are encouraging all our members and supporters to jump on board and get involved.
There are a variety of ways in which you can help those affected by the devastating floods.
Donate an item to a flood affected family
The Brisbane Lions Online Shop has set up a new category for flood relief donations. So many people have lost all their possessions, and purchasing a small gift from the Lions Shop could go a long way towards helping them rebuild.
These are small items between $4 and $40 and are available for purchase now from lions.com.au/shop. Items include t-shirts, backpacks, stickers, footballs, handballs, and gift packs.
The Lions have set a target of 500 items - please join us in contributing directly to the people who need it. Your gift can truly make a difference.
Community BBQ
The Lions held a FREE Community BBQ on Thursday 20 January during the team’s open training session at Giffin Park, Birubi St, Coorparoo.
Members of the community came along to watch the training session, meet the players and get some autographs afterwards, and enjoyed the activities the Lions had on offer.
There were giveaways, handball targets, an inside look from Head of Welfare/Leadership and Development Manny Lynch, as well as a sausage sizzle, pies and drinks for a gold coin donation.
The BBQ also featured a raffle with some great prizes including signed Lions gear, holidays, gift vouchers, and much more.
All proceeds from the afternoon went towards the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal.
Schools cleanup
Lions players Jed Adcock and Callum Bartlett travelled to Milperra State School in Chelmer on Monday 17 January to raise awareness of the damage that Queensland schools have suffered in the floods.
The school has been devastated by the floods and it was a prime example of just how much support and help our schools will need following this disaster.
The Lions players and staff also visited Moorooka State School on Wednesday 19 January to assist in the setup of new classrooms, as Moorooka will be playing host to Rocklea State School, which has been displaced by the floods and now requires somewhere for its students to begin the 2011 school year.
The Lions will continue to assist schools with cleanup over the coming weeks to ensure that the kids of Brisbane can return to their daily routine as soon as possible.
Lions and Lions band together
Community organisation the Lions Club, together with the Brisbane Lions, sent a truck full of supplies to flood-ravaged areas on Tuesday 18 January.
The Lions Club initiative to collect as many supplies as possible to transport to affected areas was met with enthusiasm from the staff and players of the Brisbane Lions, with everyone digging deep and contributing anything spare to the cause.
Lions players and staff donated a truck full of sporting equipment, clothing, furniture and household items to be taken to the areas that require supplies the most.
Australia Unites: Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal
Lions players Jonathan Brown, Bryce Retzlaff and Aaron Cornelius joined a host of Australian celebrities to man the phones during Channel 9’s Australia Unites: Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal telethon on Sunday 9 January.
The Lions, along with the AFL and all 17 Clubs, combined to contribute $500,000.00 towards the appeal.
The telethon was largely in response to flooding in areas such as Rockhampton and Bundaberg, and came even before the disastrous flash flooding in Toowoomba, Grantham, Ipswich and Brisbane.
Following the movement of the floods further south, the appeal has grown considerably.
Over $10 million was raised on the night, with a total of over $123 million raised since.
As a Queensland Club, the Brisbane Lions have been touched by this tragedy and are committed to helping as much as possible to assist those affected by the floods. The Club is working on a number of other initiatives to assist in the flood relief appeal and will keep members informed of these.
