WEST Coast coach John Worsfold has given friend and former premiership teammate Guy McKenna a ringing endorsement as the senior coaches prepare to go head-to-head for the first time in Sunday's NAB Cup qualifying final at Patersons Stadium.

McKenna, who will lead a young Gold Coast outfit to Western Australia for the first time this week, played alongside Worsfold in the Eagles' 1992 and 1994 premierships, and was a member of West Coast's coaching staff in Worsfold's first season in charge.

Worsfold said he had spoken to McKenna this week, and he had no doubt his former teammate was ready to coach at the highest level.

"It's been great that he's been able to build this team over the last two years and now [he's] coaching them in their first season," Worsfold said from Subiaco Oval on Thursday.

"The experiences he's had after coming out of playing and spending a little bit of time here as a coach and then coaching Claremont, then with Mick (Malthouse).

"It's a great opportunity for him."

Worsfold said the Eagles would enter Sunday's clash with the understanding that "they don't have as much of an idea about the opposition".

However, the coach said it was a perfect opportunity to learn about the AFL's newest club, and a highly rated group of youngsters led by WA product David Swallow.

"The bonus for us is to have a look at all their young players and they've got a few of their senior players in as well," he said.

"We at least get to see a little bit of what the players look like. We know their names - but just to see them in action and roles they're playing, that sort of thing."

West Coast will play Gold Coast once during the 2011 season, at Patersons Stadium in round 11.
