Usually when you read about a footballer facing the chop, it doesn’t bode well for the player involved.

But for Gavin Urquhart, he has embraced the thought of getting cut…especially if it’s to help raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

The World’s Greatest Shave is one of Australia’s biggest fundraising events and Urquhart has been carefully nurturing his crop of brown curls in order to help support the event.

Money raised funds free services to support patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. It also funds blood cancer research to find better treatments and cures.

“It’s a great cause and it’s taken me a fair while to grow my hair. I’m definitely at the point where I need to shave it and there’s no better reason to do it.”

Urquhart has copped a few jibes from his team mates over the past few months with his long locks getting out of control.

“They’ve all been getting stuck into me lately. I think they’re jealous!”

Around 10,000 Australians will be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma this year and more than 125,000 people from all walks of life are expected to shave or colour their hair.

Urquhart is aiming to raise in excess of $3,000 and wants to give one lucky supporter the chance to do the deed.

“If someone wants to make a good contribution to my effort, I’d be happy for them to come down to club in person and shave my head in front of the entire team.”

All you have to do is make a pledge, then send proof of your donation to info@kangaroos.com.au with your full name and contact details to be in the running to cut Gavin's hair.
