PORT Adelaide defender Alipate Carlile has denied links to Greater Western Sydney, but the Power fears its players could be a target of the new club.

With former Port coach Mark Williams now an assistant at the Giants, Power coach Matthew Primus conceded his side could be more vulnerable to player poaching by GWS.

But Primus was confident out-of-contract players, including Carlile, would see a brighter future at Alberton than at Blacktown.

"Choco [Williams] does know the boys well, but we'd like to think that we're progressing better than Greater Western Sydney and whilst money does speak to a certain extent, hopefully players want to stay at a club that's closer to the finals than another team is," Primus said.

"We'll probably let it [the GWS speculation] play out until we actually really need to know what's going on contract-wise and then we'll sit down and have a good, honest discussion with the players that haven't re-signed about where they're at.

"It's a difficult situation because once their names get bandied around it's close to spot on that they're leaving. We've just got to be open and talk with our players and see where it's at."

Carlile and dashing wingman Danyle Pearce are two of a growing number of players reported to be in the sights of the cashed-up Giants.

Carlile has emerged as one of the most promising full-backs in the competition since establishing himself in the Port Adelaide side in 2008 and is a member of the club's seven-man leadership group this season.

The 74-game defender is out of contract at the end of the season and falls into the age bracket of players GWS is targeting, but the 23-year-old said he was surprised by speculation linking him to the competition's 18th team.

"I haven’t even heard anything [from GWS], so I'm not sure about that [speculation] and I'm happy at Port," Carlile told afl.com.au.

"You'd have to ask [football operations manager] Peter Rohde when they [contract negotiations] will start, but hopefully soon.

"It's been good so far. I've had a really good time here at Port Adelaide and I'm hopeful that will continue."

Last year, the Power scored a major coup by securing the signatures of Victorian-born pair Travis Boak and Robbie Gray.

Alipate Carlile is a $226,800 defender in the Toyota AFL Dream Team competition.
