Jarrad Boumann has been welcomed to the Hawks' inner-sanctum after a complex trade involving four clubs during the 2011 Trade Week.

The 22 year old spent three seasons at the Western Bulldogs after being selected at pick 48 in the 2007 AFL Draft, where he originally played as a forward before moving into defense.

"Earlier on I did prefer playing forward, but after a while I decided that playing in the back suited me more, and I do enjoy it more now," he told hawthornfc.com.au.

The key defender went on to spend the 2011 season playing for Hawthorn's affiliated VFL team the Box Hill Hawks, where he came third in the club's best and fairest and also took out the Most Consistent Player Award.

"When I was recruited (to Box Hill) I got to play as the key backman and played on the bigger forwards, so it was a good opportunity to get that," he said.

So how does the 197cm, 90kg defender slot-into the Hawks' already impressive back-line?

"Clarko is hoping I can play a main defensive roll again so I can give guys like (Josh) Gibson a chop-out to move around the ground.

"To even get a second AFL opportunity is great, I'm looking forward to meeting new guys and being part of the club.

"I can't wait."

Boumann will continue to train with Box Hill to "keep up his fitness" before commencing with the Hawks in the Club's official pre-season.
