BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss has identified his team's midfield as needing to provide more opportunities for their forward line ahead of Saturday night's match against Richmond at the Gabba.

Coming off heavy back-to-back losses against the Sydney Swans and Carlton where they were soundly beaten by the inside 50 count (60-38 and 59-43 respectively), Voss said if his forwards got a decent supply of possession they could kick a winning score.

He said last week's 61-point defeat by Carlton was more about the Lions' inability to spread quickly and use the ball efficiently than it was about endeavour and was something they had worked hard on at training this week.

"Certainly our midfield has to make sure we start getting our hands on the footy," he said.

"If we give our forwards opportunities then we've got a chance to score. That's going to be our main focus coming into this game, making sure we can help our defence when we can, but at the same time making sure we can give our forwards opportunities because we've got a forward line-up there that can kick a (winning) score for us."

The Lions have slightly altered its forward structure this week with Patrick Karnezis coming in for his first game in place of Bryce Retzlaff.

Karnezis - the club's ninth debutant this season - is 191cm and came to Brisbane via the Oakleigh Chargers.

Captain Jonathan Brown spent considerable time talking with the 19-year-old at training on Friday in what almost looked like a one-on-one coaching lesson ahead of his first senior match.

Voss said he was excited to give the teenager his call-up.

"He's certainly going to be that third tall for us and he can play through the midfield.

"A few training sessions during pre-season I must admit I was pretty excited by what I saw. (He's) Just a really natural footballer who understands the game.

"Like any young player coming in they're going to take time to evolve and grow into their body and build the physical requirements that are needed, but some of the game nuances that you need to understand he's got in absolute spades."

The Lions have selected backline general Josh Drummond after he missed four matches with a knee injury, while midfielders Ryan Harwood and Rohan Bewick have also been recalled.

The two teams met at the MCG in round six this season, with Richmond running away in the final quarter for a 26-point victory.

Voss said the Lions had learnt from that match, and while he respected the Tigers, it was certainly a winnable match.

"They're around us (on the table) but they've certainly shown some really good upside," he said.

"They've got some good youthful players coming through that have spent 12 months together. We obviously want to make sure we have a good account of ourselves at our home ground …. and make sure we can show our members and fans there's something to be excited about."

Voss said there was good news following surgery on Jed Adcock's finger this week, with the defender expected to miss just three weeks instead of the initial six they had feared.
