CTV > Paul Medhurst speaks to CTV after accepting his award

The front-runner for the first half of the season, Paul Medhurst finished the best and fairest count in second place winning the R. T. Rush Trophy.

Career-best numbers marked the former Fremantle Docker’s 2008 season; averaging 16 possessions, eight marks and two goals a game.

Medhurst was the only Collingwood player to be awarded All-Australian honours.

In his second year at the club, the forward/midfielder played every game this season and proved to be a match winner on numerous occasions.

Medhurst had a strong start to the season kicking 17 goals in his first six games.

The 44-point win over Richmond at the MCG showed supporters that Medhurst would have a successful year after 20 kicks, 14 marks and a one goal performance.

In the loss against North Melbourne in round five, 17 possessions, 11 marks and five goals earned the forward three votes from the coaches.

The next week was equally as consistent kicking six goals and winning the Anzac Day Medal in a 73-point drubbing of Essendon.

Medhurst led the club with 179 marks this season ranking him seventh in the league.

The second half saw Medhurst move into the midfield on occasion, developing his versatility for 2009.

Two goals at ANZ Stadium combined with 17 kicks and eight marks awarded him two votes.

Round 15 against Adelaide highlighted his ability to change the direction of a game.  He kicked five majors in the second half to lead the Magpies in a 32-point win.

The 179 centimetre forward lead the Copeland voting into Round 20 yet was unable to poll a vote in his remaining four games.

He finished the year with a total of 47 votes, six votes behind winner Dane Swan.

"I really love playing here," Medhurst told Collingwoodfc.com.au directly after he accepted the award.

"It is a good fit and I am really looking forward to my next two years at the club."
