Sam Fisher is not just a great performer on the field for the Saints, he is a growing leader of the St Kilda Football Club.
Throughout the NAB Cup, the All-Australian defender outlined that he has been working alongside young up and coming defenders Tommy Walsh and Tom Simpkin.
“We have a young backline and I’m just trying to take more of a leadership role in organising and directing down there. I think that’s one part of my game that can really improve,” Fisher said.
Fisher outlined that being a member of the Saints Leadership Group is an important role which brings out the best of all members.
“Being in the leadership group brings out responsibility and I think it gets the best out of you,” he said.
One of the team’s key strengths is that there are a number of leaders who spread the work load, rather than depend on a few key figures, noted Fisher.
“I think the more people we have in there [the Leadership Group] the better. It’s more a weight of numbers thing, the more people we get living the leadership trademark each week and giving feedback, the better off the side will be,” he said.
The 2008 Best and Fairest winner has hit the ground running in his two NAB Cup matches this year, he had 16 disposals and 7 marks in Saturday night’s victory over Geelong and looks set for another stellar season in defence for the Saints.
Fisher joined the club after the 2003 National Draft, where he was recruited from West Adelaide for pick number 55. The running defender debuted in 2004 and quickly became a vital performer for the Saints.
