Shannon Byrnes will be promoted to Geelong’s senior list after two excellent seasons on the club’s rookie list. The Cats also announced the first cuts from its senior list with defender Daniel Foster and midfielder David Spriggs to be de-listed. Rookie listed players Jeff Smith and James Allan will not be retained for the 2005 season.

“Shannon has shown over the past two seasons that he has the qualities to be an AFL player,” Geelong coach Mark Thompson said.

“He proved his capabilities this year when he got the opportunity at senior level and we are really pleased that we can add him to our senior list.”

Byrnes played four games after being upgraded after James Kelly suffered a broken leg in round 14. He made his debut against Sydney in round 16 at Skilled Stadium and kicked a crucial goal late in the game that saw Geelong take the lead in a game it would ultimately win by 15 points.

Thompson commended Spriggs and Foster who both joined the club through the 1999 national draft.

“Both Daniel and David have been good contributors to our club over their time with us, but in analyzing our list we feel they would have very limited opportunities and we want to allow them time to seek new clubs now,” Thompson said.

Spriggs was selected by Geelong with the 15th selection in the 1999 national draft. He went onto play 64 games with the Cats, despite missing the entire 2002 season with a knee injury.

Foster was chosen with pick 23 in 1999 and played 17 games with Geelong, but did not figure in the senior team in 2003 or 2004. Foster was a member of the Cats 2002 VFL premiership team.

Smith spent two seasons on the rookie list and the club had to include him on its senior list or let him go. Allan, who came back from a knee injury, spent the 2004 season on the rookie list.

“We did not see a spot on the senior list for either Jeff or James and they will now be able to look at their options.

“We wish those four boys all the best in their future endeavours.”
