BACKS
Michael Jamison (Carlton) - The nominated rookie stymied the influence of in-form Pie Paul Medhurst, who was outstanding the previous round. Jamison's ability to play 'small' on Medhurst and restrict him to one goal earned the plaudits of coach Brett Ratten.
Matthew Scarlett (Geelong) - The brilliant defender was at his rebounding best against St Kilda. He continually drove the Cats into attack and was arguably best on ground as he also kept key Saint forward Fraser Gehrig in check.
Dustin Fletcher (Essendon) - The standout player of the match against the Western Bulldogs, Fletcher produced one of the finest performances of his 280-game career, resulting in a career-best 32 disposals. His rebound and spoiling was again exceptional.
HALF BACKS
Brent Guerra (Hawthorn) - Guerra was instrumental in his side's win over Adelaide, providing great and run-and-carry from the back-half. His ball use was excellent as he amassed a round-high 38 disposals – far and away his best effort in 139 AFL matches.
Jarrad Waite (Carlton) - Played a pivotal role down back on key Magpie forward Anthony Rocca, Waite kept "Pebbles" to just one goal and six touches. By contrast, Waite, who was arguably best on ground, collected 26 disposals.
Tadhg Kennelly (Sydney) - The run and dash of Kennelly was an integral part of Sydney's comprehensive win over West Coast, particularly in the first half when he won 15 of his 21 disposals. His ball use was excellent.
CENTRES
Matthew Richardson (Richmond) - Although "Richo" hardly fits the Robbie Flower wingman model, his effort from this position – he finished with 25 disposals, 15 marks and four goals – was the catalyst for Richmond's stunning win.
Simon Black (Brisbane Lions) - Black had a super final quarter, winning 11 of his 32 disposals in this term as he played a massive part in his side's stunning come-from-behind win over Port Adelaide. Black's clearance work was yet again first-class.
Chance Bateman (Hawthorn) - In career-best form, Bateman continued his fine start to the season with 30 disposals and two goals against the Crows as he celebrated becoming the first indigenous player to play 100 matches with Hawthorn.
HALF-FORWARDS
Steve Johnson (Geelong) - Johnson was on song against the Saints, booting four goals and winning 20 disposals in yet another classy display. It was his best effort since his Norm Smith Medal-winning performance.
Daniel Bradshaw (Brisbane Lions) - Bradshaw was inspirational in the final term, booting three of his five goals in a match-winning display. It continued his remarkable comeback from the knee injury that sidelined him in 2007.
Brent Harvey (North Melbourne) - The standout performer in his team's 48-point win over Melbourne, "Boomer" was dangerous in the midfield and across half-forward, claiming 26 touches, seven inside 50s and a goal.
FORWARDS
Michael O'Loughlin (Sydney) - The club's games record holder set the tone against West Coast with two early goals, finishing the match with four to his name. He also had a hand in three scoring assists.
Brendan Fevola (Carlton) - On the back of eight goals against Essendon, "Fev" produced another brilliant performance in front of goal, booting seven majors, mostly on Collingwood defender Harry O'Brien. Fevola now has 19 goals for the season.
Lance Franklin (Hawthorn) - The dynamic Hawk shone yet again, bagging six goals against Adelaide. He sits at the top of the goalkicking table with 21 majors after just four rounds, a remarkable achievement.
FOLLOWERS
Troy Simmonds (Richmond) - Playing against one of his former sides, Simmonds was a vital part of his team's 64-point victory over Fremantle. He gained 22 disposals and worked tirelessly with his excellent midfield brigade.
Kane Johnson (Richmond) - The captain led from the front all day and was a major reason for Richmond's memorable win in the west. Johnson's performance was one of the finest in his 205-game AFL career, highlighted by a personal-best 36 disposals.
Nathan Foley (Richmond) - Foley played a massive role in Richmond's fine start against Freo, winning 11 of his 24 disposals during the first quarter. Once again, the former rookie-list player shone with his contested ball-work and clearance play.
INTERCHANGE
Jordan McMahon (Richmond) - Playing his 118th AFL match and his fourth for the Tigers the midfielder was outstanding with a career-best 32 disposals. His dash and skill, highlighted by a long-bomb from outside 50 metres, were features of his game.
Luke Hodge (Hawthorn) - Skippered the side in the absence of Sam Mitchell and stepped up with aplomb. Hodge shone with his usual hard-at-it style of play and silky skills, winning 25 touches, six clearances and six tackles.
Cameron Ling (Geelong) - Managed to curb the influence of slick Saint Nick Dal Santo and in the process won the ball 28 times himself, 10 more than his opponent. It was yet another excellent display from Ling, whose contested work was a highlight.
Jonathan Brown (Brisbane Lions) - The Lions co-captain teamed brilliantly up forward with Daniel Bradshaw, particularly in the final term, when he bagged two of his four goals for the night. It was yet another telling display from one of the game's elite.
